Congressman Fred Upton has had a chance to tour a major new gas plant in Niles, and says the Indeck Niles Energy Center will be a boost to the area. He tells WSJM News he stopped by Friday to learn more about the $1 billion investment.

“This is going to be the most energy efficient gas plant within 250 miles of us, and as we look at the Palisades plant beginning to think about the closure there, that electricity is going to need to be made up,” Upton told WSJM News.

Some of the turbines are already on site, and Upton says he’s glad he was able to help the project get rolling.

“I helped with a number of easements and regulations to make sure that we actually could break ground.”

Indeck Niles will be a 1,000 megawatt combined-cycle power plant that generates enough power for 635,000 users. Niles was chosen for its location because it’s a central access point to natural gas transmission lines. Upton says the plant will be up and running in early 2022.
