Eastern Michigan University is delaying Thursday’s move-in to September 17th due to the coronavirus. University president James Smith says it’s disappointing for students, but they want to make sure they are moving forward in the safest possible manner.

“We may need to increase our testing protocol, for example. By then we will have some results from Labor Day,” says Smith. “If there’s a big peak for Labor Day, do we have specific parts of our population that we may want to utilize our testing protocol around. If we don’t have a spike, then we’ll feel more comfortable.”

Smith says they will strictly enforce a ban on large gatherings, but will be pro-active in speaking with students to make sure they understand the importance of social distancing and other safeguards in place across campus.
