The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed a bat found in Allegan County tested positive for rabies. The Allegan County Health Department says everyone is urged to stay away from wild animals like skunks, bats, raccoons, foxes, and stray cats and dogs. It adds now is a good time for residents to “bat proof” their homes by closing openings larger than a quarter-inch by a half-inch. It says if any animal bites you or your pet, wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical or veterinary help immediately. It says all pets should get the rabies vaccine.
