Orange barrels marking the start of a massive project to connect US-31 to I-94 will go out on Monday. Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells WSJM News the three year, $122 million effort will have several moving parts, and this first one will be the reconstruction of the I-94 Business Loop from Urbandale Avenue to Euclid Avenue in Benton Township.

“That includes the construction of a roundabout at Crystal Avenue,” Schirripa said. “So, from Crystal Avenue to the west, it will be a three lane section, two through lanes and a center turn lane, and then from Crystal Avenue all the way out to I-94, it will be two lanes, one in each direction. During that construction, there’s going to be one lane open in each direction, but Crystal Avenue will be closed at that intersection.”

Traffic will be detoured. Schirripa says work will also start on the reconstruction of the Britain Avenue bridge over US-31. The bridge itself won’t be finished until next year. The work on the Business Loop is expected to be finished in November.
