Now in front of Benton Harbor High School on Colfax Avenue is a Black Lives Matter street mural. Volunteers painted it on Saturday morning with organizer and citizen activist Trenton Bowens telling WSJM News it was great to see the community come together.

“We made one statement that Black lives matter,” Bowens said. “We’re living in some strange times. It’s not against all lives matter because we do believe all lives matter. We’re all created with the same blood by the same creator, but right now, we’re facing a crisis in the Black community. So I’m excited that people…we all came together and made a statement.”

Bowens said it took about three hours to paint the mural. It will receive some additions on Sunday, when people add their hand prints. Also on Sunday, Bowens said Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner, will be in town. He’s looking forward to hearing her message.
