Berrien County voters headed to the polls for primaries on Tuesday, although most votes were submitted via absentee ballots. Looking at key races, state Representative Pauline Wendzel will have a shot at another term in the Michigan House. In the words of Wendzel’s campaign, she “brushed aside” a challenge in the Republican primary by Jacquie Gnodtke Blackwell for a win. Wendzel will face Democrat Chokwe Pitchford in November.

As for other county races, Shelly Weich has defeated Troy Rolling in the Repubican primary for Berrien County Treasurer. Lora Gnodtke Freehling has defeated Brandon Vance in the GOP primary for Berrien County Register of Deeds.

Mamie Yarbrough prevailed over challenger Sharon Henderson in the Democratic primary for Berrien County Commissioner in the 4th District. Bruce Gorenflo beat David Yardley in the Republican primary for Berrien County Commissioner in the 5th District. In an upset, Berrien County Commissioner Chris Huegel has lost his Republican primary challenge from Julie Wuerfel in the 6th District. Voters also decided a variety of millage renewals.

Approved were a County Law Enforcement Proposal, a County 911 Proposal, and a County Senior Center Proposal. Township primaries and proposals were also decided Tuesday. Check ElectionReporting.com for results.
