Governor Gretchen Whitmer wants everyone to take the mask rule more seriously, and is also suggesting it could be strengthened. Speaking Thursday, she said with COVID cases going up in the state, it becomes all the more important for people to take precautions. She wasn’t impressed with the scene at a Cass County lake over the Fourth of July weekend.

“Over the holiday weekend, we saw countless Michiganders gather in large groups to celebrate the Fourth of July without a mask,” Whitmer said. “I think a lot of people saw this video footage from Cass County, Diamond Lake.”

The governor said wearing a mask greatly reduces the risk of spreading COVID-19.

“I want to be very clear. Right now, the law requires that anyone in an enclosed public space has to wear a mask, and that means every store you’re going into. And we are reviewing that requirement and considering whether or not we need to take this a step further to strengthen compliance.”

Whitmer said Michigan doesn’t want to wind up like Florida, where they saw 11,000 new cases in just one day last weekend. Again, she implored one and all to social distance and mask up for the sake of friends, neighbors, family, and the economy.
