With hospitals around the country making COVID-19 their main focus and losing a massive amount of revenue, Congressman Fred Upton thinks emergency loans they got through the CARES Act should not have to be paid back. He tells WSJM News he and most of Michigan’s Congressional delegation have made that request to the House and Senate leadership.

“That money is probably supposed to be paid back, and our delegation met on a conference call this last week, and 15 of the 16 of us wrote a letter to our leadership asking that those monies, which will never be recovered by the hospitals because they’ve lost those services, should actually be considered as a grant.”

Upton says the next phase of the federal COVID-19 response, which he calls Phase 4, could include a provision essentially forgiving those loans. It will still be some time before action is taken on that front.
