State Senator Kim LaSata is calling on Governor Gretchen Whitmer to ease some of the COVID-19 restrictions on landscaping companies. She’s sent a letter to the governor warning that a failure to allow Michigan residents to follow state guidelines to kill and prevent mosquitoes further threatens their safety. LaSata tells WSJM News that means landscapers are needed to prevent Eastern equine encephalitis, which is spread by mosquitoes.

“Last year, half of the individuals who died from EEE were from my district,” LaSata said. “Now our concern is that at this time Landscapers need to be out there spraying to prevent EEE from occurring again.”

EEE was reported around the state last year, and LaSata says the mild winter we’ve since experienced could make this year even worse. LaSata says many people rely on landscaping companies to spray for mosquitoes, telling us landscapers are just one example of a type of business that she thinks could safely reopen.
