Area restaurants are coping as best they can with the new order to close for anything other than deliveries, carryout, or drive-thru service. In downtown St. Joseph, Julie Thomson owns Zoup and Biggby Coffee.

“We have 50 employees, so my main concern is to try to give them as many hours as we can,” said Thomson. “We are still doing carryout service and we are doing delivery and catering, also.”

Laura Rusin owns Captain Nemo’s in South Haven and tells us they saw it coming when the governors of Illinois and Ohio ordered restaurants closed for sit-down meals.

“Today we did a deep cleaning and disinfected everything,” Rusin tells our newsroom. “Everyday we will have takeout from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Both Rusin and Thomson say it’s unfortunate, but it’s much more important to make whatever moves are needed to keep the community healthy and safe. Rusin says they currently have about 10 people on staff, but that normally ramps up to around 30 during the summer. We will  have more comments from other area restaurants, including Froehlich’s Bakery in Three Oaks, on the air Tuesday morning on News/Talk 94.9 WSJM.
