A two-foot concrete wall will be installed in New Buffalo to protect a stretch of Whittaker Street from flooding. Parks Director Kristen D’Amico tells our partners at WSBT-22 that the flooding has been an issue and is impacting an important part of the city.

“It’s not just a couple of inches; it’s almost a foot of water and it’s for hours at a time. So it’s a hazard, people can’t get down here. The people can’t get to their condos and nobody can get to the beach,” said D’Amico.

City Manager Dave Richards says the action needs to be taken now to prevent any more damage.

“If it comes up and the wind blows from the northwest, it’s going to flood the street again and it’s going to create a safety hazard and also going to deteriorate the asphalt,” added Richards.

It’s expected the two-foot wall will be high enough, but Richards says it can go higher if need be. Work will start next week.
