The Berrien County Road Department has shut down part of Lubke Road in New Buffalo Township due to erosion along a stream bank. Managing Director Jason Latham tells WSJM News Lubke is now closed between US-12 and Sand Road because of a stream near the road. Recent rains have destabilized the embankment.

“It took more of the embankment of the road to the point where now the shoulder is unstable and so we had to close it,” Latham said. “We’re working with EGLe, formerly the DEQ, to get permits to see what we can do.”

Latham says the solution could include installing some kind of steel sheeting along the embankment. Traffic on the affected road is being rerouted down Wilson Road to Stromer Road and over to Sand Road. Signs haven’t yet been installed to mark the detour as the Berrien County Road Department determines how long it will take to fix the situation.
