Nessel On LGBTQ Protections: It’s Time

“It’s time.” Those are the words of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nesel regarding protections for LGBTQ people under Michigan’s civil rights law. Currently, a petition campaign by “Fair and Equal Michigan” is trying to gather more than 340,000 names of registered voters to send the proposal to the state Legislature:

“I think it’s great,” Nessel told Michigan News Network. “I think it’s long overdue. We should have had equal protection in the state for the LGBT community a long time ago. Polling is somewhere in the neighborhood, I think, of 78% approval.”

If the measure is not supported by state lawmakers, it would go before the voters in November. Several major Michigan businesses are pushing for the change to be made. Some Republicans in the state Legislature want there to be a religious exemption in the law.
