Reducing the stigma that can be associated with drug addiction is a goal of the Berrien County Health Department as it works to fight drug overdose deaths. Berrien County Health Department Communications Manager Gillian Conrad tells WSJM News they’re spreading a message about the dangers of opioids, as opioid-based painkillers can be very addictive.

“We know that because addiction can happen so quickly with opioids, someone can become addicted in as little as five days after using an opioid prescription drug,” Conrad said.

Conrad says that’s why it’s important everyone follow their doctor’s directions when they receive an opioid prescription. She says doctors are also getting the message about opioid risks, using the Michigan Automated Prescription System more often.

“Since 2016, there was a 434% increase in the times that physicians and pharmacists checked patient prescription history using that MAPS tool.”

Conrad wants everyone to know there are places to turn when someone is struggling with an addiction. She recommends those who are in trouble reach out to Carol’s Hope, a center on M-139 that connects people with treatment. It’s open 24/7. Additionally, Conrad says with the holidays here, it’s a good idea to clear your medicine cabinet of old prescription drugs. You can find out more about opioids right here.
