At least 65 years in prison is the punishment for the man who shot and killed his girlfriend’s husband in an ambush outside the home of the victim’s parents in St. Joseph Township on New Year’s Eve. Jeremy Cuellar was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Army Sergeant Tyrone Hassel III. Hassel’s wife, Kemia Hassel, is serving life without parole for orchestrating the murder in order to collect his Army death benefits and life insurance money. All three were stationed together at Fort Stewart, Georgia. During the victim impact statement given by Hassel’s mother, our partners at WSBT report Cuellar shouted a profanity and later apologized to the sergeant’s family, calling himself a “fool” for ever trusting Kemia.
