The Southwest Michigan Planning Commission is holding a tour this week designed to teach residents how the environment is protected via wastewater treatment plants. Senior planner Marcy Hamilton tells WSJM News they’re going to tour the Galien River Sanitary District in New Buffalo on Thursday.

“Usually, wastewater treatment plants are not open to the public, so we’re working with them to allow the public to come in and give us a behind the scenes tour of the wastewater treatment plant,” Hamilton said.

The event will include a one-hour tour of the plant and talks with experts, along with an overview of environmental compliance. Hamilton says everyone will be amazed to learn how the treatment process works. The tour will run from 5:30 to 7:30. It complements a water quality workshop planned at Bridgman City Hall on Saturday, October 5. Although the events are free, you’ll need to register online. You can also call the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission to sign up.
