Legislation Aims To Fight Elder Abuse

The Michigan House Families, Children and Seniors Committee has referred a package of bills dealing with elder abuse to the House Judiciary Committee and recommend passage. State Representative Sarah Anthony, the plan’s sponsor, says the bills deal with assault and embezzlement of older adults.

“Elder adults are unfairly targeted for crimes at a higher rate because of perceived vulnerability,” Anthony said.

Anthony says embezzlement often occurs by family members of seniors. The bill defines an elder adult as 65 or older.
