A good apple crop is expected in Michigan this year. Michigan Apple Committee executive director Diane Smith says 25.25 million bushels are expected in Michigan, a top apple producing state.

“We’re in third place (with production), but with flavor, we’re in first,” says Smith with a chuckle, noting Washington and New York are ahead of Michigan most years in production.

Smith says the 25.25 million bushels is “just a smidge over our five-year average” but adds it’s “definitely a great quality crop.”

There are more than 11.3 million apple trees in commercial production in Michigan on some 825 family-run farms. The harvest has begun and should wrap up just before Halloween.
