Whirlpool is celebrating the opening of a new child care facility at its Lakeview campus. Project leader Erin Schroeder tells WSJM News the Eddy, as it’s being called, will serve the families who work for the appliance maker.

“It’s a 22,000 square foot facility,” Schroeder said. “It has about 15 classrooms to accommodate children from the ages of six weeks up until six years of age.”

The new building, at 900 Paw Paw Avenue in Benton Township, will offer programs from KinderCare, a children’s daycare and education group. Schroeder says the Eddy was designed specifically to accommodate the children it will serve.

“You’ll notice when you walk in the entryway its very expansive windows. It lets in a lot of natural light. There are even widows that are very specifically located at levels that children can actually see out of.”

The grand opening for the Eddy was held last week. Its name was chosen by Whirlpool employees, and means a small part of a whirlpool. Schroeder says the facility helps Whirlpool to attract and retain talent while helping employees to maintain a good work-life balance.
