Now on the job at Lake Michigan College is Nygil Likely, LMC’s new dean of student affairs. LMC says Likely has been brought in to help enhance the student experience by giving students someone to go to when they need help. Likely told WSJM News about some of the challenges many college students face.

“Challenges with mental health issues,” Likely said. “Also there’s a significant increase in first generation students on college campuses who just don’t have the knowledge base or familiarity with higher education.”

Likely comes to the area after having served as director of college access at Calvin College. He says he wants students to know he’s there.

“I am open to hearing from them, the concerns they might have, ideas that they may have about how we can improve their overall experience.”

In the past 20 years, Likely has observed some changes in what students need. He says addressing those changes will require strong partnerships with other community organizations. He comes to the area from Grand Rapids.
