Accusations of decades of a cover-up are being thrown at Minnesota-based 3M over PFAS. Attorney Nicholas Coulson is representing the city of Parchment in its class action lawsuit against 3M and Georgia Pacific, and says a “Detroit Free Press” investigation has found internal documents showing 3M covered up the health and environmental effects from the chemicals dating back to the 1950s.

“There were also substantial efforts on the part of 3M where any research that came out that did look bad for them, they would prevent it from being published,” says Coulson.

The chemicals, which do not break down in the environment, have been used in everything from Gore-Tex, to Teflon, to Scotch Gard. PFAS has been used to make to make shoes, sandwich bags, and firefighting foam.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has announced plans to sue 3M over the suspected carcinogen.
