The Poor People’s Campaign intends to take its moral agenda to end poverty into 2019 here in Michigan and across the country. It’s modeled after the 1960’s effort by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Poor People’s Campaign says “The truth is that the millions of poor people in the United States today are poor because the wealth and resources of our country have been flowing to a small number of people and federal programs are not meeting the growing needs of the poor.”

Poor People’s Campaign organizer Carlos Santacruz says they’ve been active in Benton Harbor and across Michigan and they’re calling on people struggling with poverty to join them.

“We have a website – it’s called ThePoorPeoplesCampaign.org, and people can sign up there. Here in Michigan we’re gonna start a series of listening tours to lift the stories of impacted people. We did this in Flint, we did this in Benton Harbor, we did this in Saginaw,” Santacruz tells WSJM News. He adds the effort to fight poverty is coming from a moral foundation – the idea that poverty is causing suffering nationwide, that it is unjust and that America has the resources and a moral obligation to end it.
