President Trump is threatening to shut down the government if he doesn’t get his way with getting $5 billion for a wall on the Mexican border. Congressman Fred Upton admits lawmakers are running short on time to pass the bill to keep things running.

“There’s a lot of issues to get done before we close out this Congress,” Upton tells WSJM News. “Obviously the biggest one is the continuing resolution, which expires at the end of next week.” That is the legislation that keeps the federal government from shutting down. Upton says plenty of negotiations are underway on several levels between Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate along with the White House, but he and many others admit the meeting between Trump and the Democratic leaders of the House and Senate yesterday did not go well. Along with working to keep the government running, Upton says lawmakers need to pass the renewal of the Violence Against Women Act, which funds programs nationwide related to domestic assault.
