The Michigan Department of Treasury is warning about a scam. Spokesman Ron Leix says a phony letter is being sent that threatens taxpayers about an overdue tax bill.
“That’s not how we operate,” says Leix. “We send you several pieces of correspondence on official state of Michigan letterhead and talk about things that may happen, but don’t say ‘pay your taxes or you’re going to be in big trouble.’”
Leix says the scammers are getting information from public records about tax leins, so someone might think it is legitimate.
