It’s not something you find in Lake Michigan every day, but an alligator was caught in the lake in Illinois this morning. Animal control officials in Waukegan got a call about the four-foot gator slowly swimming in the lake. The caller then sent a video. An animal control worker was struggling to wrestle up the gator, which had tape around it’s mouth, onto the pier when marina worker Matt Palya wandered by.

He asked what he could do to help, and was told to grab something to cover the face of the gator. Palya says he grabbed a pillowcase and covered its head.

“I grabbed a knife and cut the fishing line and hook off and she (the animal control worker) took a second to catch her breath, and I helped her get it up in the back of the van,” said Palya.

The alligator is being transported to the Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest.
