Benton Harbor City Manager Darwin Watson has a contract proposal from the city commission on his desk, with some changes from the most recent contract that expired in February. The new proposal does not have a specified end date, essentially making his employment an at-will position. Watson said after the meeting he doesn’t have a lot to say about it quite yet.

“I can’t say anything relative to it until I get my attorneys to look at it,” Watson said.

The city commission voted 5-4 to approve submitting the contract proposal to Watson at Monday night’s meeting, with Mayor Marcus Muhammad’s vote in favor being the deciding tally. Watson is under no timetable to respond to the commission and will continue to work under the terms of the previous agreement, under which he was employed month-to-month. His pay is unchanged from the old deal at $90,000 a year.
