If you’re driving in Michigan, you now need to allow bicyclists some space on the roadways. That’s as a new law is now in effect.

“The new law specifically requires you give bicyclists three feet of space,” says League of Michigan Bicyclists executive director John Lindenmayer. “We recommend more, if possible. Sometimes that might mean you have to slow down and wait to pass, but we just want to be sure everybody on the roads is getting to where they need to go safely.”

He says they hope to see some targeted enforcement like “Click it or Ticket” to make sure people are obeying the new law. The change was prompted by the tragedy in Kalamazoo when a Battle Creek man plowed his pickup into a group of cyclists in June 2016, killing five and injuring four.
