Jets 48, Lions 17 – Darnold recovers from 1st-play pick-6, helps Jets rout Lions
Sam Darnold threw a pick-6 on his first career NFL. But the third player taken in this year’s draft was pretty sharp the rest of the way as the New York Jets coasted to a 48-17 win over the Lions in Detroit.  Darnold finished 16 of 21 for 198 yards and two touchdowns. His first scoring pass went to Robby Anderson for 41 yards, and he added a 21-yard TD toss to Quincy Enunwa in the third quarter to put New York ahead to stay.  Isaiah Crowell led the Jets’ ground attack with 102 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries. Bilal Powell added 60 yards rushing and Darron Lee grabbed two of New York’s five interceptions.  The game was tied at 17 until the Jets scored 31 straight points in the third quarter. Lee returned an interception 36 yards for a TD, Andre Roberts brought back a punt 70 yards for a score and Isaiah Crowell took a 62-yard run to the house. Lee’s TD was the first by the Jets’ defense in 74 games.  Matthew Stafford had a rough night, completing 27 of 46 for 286 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions.

Astros 3, Tigers 2 – Verlander saluted back at Comerica, Astros beat Tigers 3-2
Justin Verlander received a warm welcome in his return to Detroit, just over a year after the Tigers shipped him to the Houston Astros.  Verlander received a lengthy standing ovation after a video tribute was played as he walked in from the bullpen. He also received another ovation during his warmup, then proceded to allow two runs and six hits over seven innings of the Astros’ 3-2 win over the Tigers. The Tigers put two runners on in the seventh, but Verlander struck out JaCoby Jones and Jeimer Candelario to escape with a 3-2 lead.  Francisco Liriano’s wild pitch and an error by shortstop Ronny Rodriguez allowed the Astros to score three unearned runs in the third. Tyler White and Marwin Gonzalez hit RBI singles, while the Tigers failed to turn two potential double plays.

Royals 4, White Sox 3 – 10 Innings – Royals win on wild throw in 10th, beat White Sox 4-3
A little bunt by Alcides Escobar paid off big for the Kansas City Royals.  White Sox reliever Jeanmar Gomez threw away Escobar’s bunt in the 10th inning Monday night, giving the Royals a 4-3 win over Chicago.  Brian Goodwin led off the Kansas City 10th with a sharp double. Escobar followed with a sacrifice and Gomez (0-2) made a wild toss over third baseman Yolmer Sanchez, letting the speedy Goodwin score easily.  Jake Newberry (2-0) pitched a perfect top of the 10th to notch the win.

Brewers 3, Cubs 2 – Brewers trim Cubs’ NL Central lead to 1 with 3-2 win
Lorenzo Cain had four hits, Mike Moustakas scored on Carl Edwards Jr.’s wild pitch in the sixth inning and the Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 on Monday night to move within one game of the division leaders.  Orlando Arcia and Jonathan Schoop each drove in a run as Milwaukee (83-62) won for the seventh time in eight games. It’s the closest the Brewers have been to the division lead since they trailed the Cubs by a game on Aug. 5.  Wade Miley (4-2) pitched five effective innings before Corbin Burnes, Josh Hader and Jeffress closed it out for wild card-leading Milwaukee. Burnes worked a scoreless sixth, Hader struck out six straight batters and Jeffress got three outs for his 11th save.

NASCAR – Late cautions send Keselowski to victory
Brad Keselowski allowed Team Penske to reach the winner’s circle at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the second time since Memorial Day weekend.  Keselowski overtook Denny Hamlin on the next-to-last lap and won the Brickyard 400, NASCAR’s last regular-season race before the Monster Energy Cup playoffs. Keselowski wasn’t a factor until two late cautions gave the 2012 series champion a chance to use fresher tires to chase down Hamlin.  Keselowski’s victory comes 3 ½ months after Penske driver Will Power won the Indianapolis 500. Penske joins Chip Ganassi as the only owners to win the Indy double in the same season.  Erik Jones was second, followed by Hamlin, Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer.  Seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson and Alex Bowman captured the final two open playoff spots in the 10-race sprint to the championship. Kurt Busch clinched the regular-season title with an eighth-place finish in the No. 18 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Golf – PGA – Bradley tops Rose in playoff
Justin Rose finished second in the BMW Championship today, but he’s now No. 1 in the world ranking. Keegan Bradley ended a six-year victory drought by beating Rose on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. Rose led the tournament heading into the final round before Bradley fired a 6-under 64 to get to 20 under. But a runner-up finish allowed Rose to become the 22nd player to reach the top spot since the ranking began in 1986. Rose had a chance to win in regulation but lipped out on the last hole.Bradley’s previous victory at come in the 2012 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. He gets a trip to Maui to start next year for the winners-only Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Tennis – Tennis federation defends umpire at US Open
The International Tennis Federation is defending the chair umpire who gave Serena Williams three code violations during the U.S. Open final, saying his "decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules."  Williams was cited by Carlos Ramos three times Saturday during her 6-2, 6-4 loss to Naomi Osaka: for getting coaching signals; for breaking her racket, which cost her a point; and for calling Ramos a thief, which cost her a game.  The tournament referee also docked Williams a total of $17,000.
