Recently-deceased Berrien County Register of Deeds Lori Jarvis has been memorialized in the Michigan Senate. On Wednesday, state Senator John Proos spoke on the floor about Jarvis, who passed away June 14 due to a car crash. Proos said Jarvis was devoted to her community and also to her state, making a long-term difference throughout.

“She’s the reason that we could today have predictable recording fees in the state of Michigan,” Proos said. “She was a driving force behind those changes, and she called them predictive fees, as opposed to just simply flat fees. This took many hours and many meetings and work with each of us in the legislature.”

Jarvis was serving her fifth term as Berrien County Register of Deeds when she died. Proos said Jarvis had been register of deeds for Berrien County since 2000 and had been re-elected four times. She was also active in the Michigan Association of Register of Deeds, serving as secretary, vice president, and then as president. The Senate held a moment of silence for Jarvis.
