Angels 6, Tigers 2 – Simmons leads Angels past Tigers 6-2
Andrelton Simmons hit a two-run homer and made several spectacular defensive plays to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night. Simmons stepped up with two key hits and two runs while Mike Trout missed his fifth consecutive game with a sore right wrist for the Angels. Nick Castellanos hit a first-inning homer, but the Tigers managed just three hits as their offensive slump continued. Detroit has scored just three runs over 39 innings while losing the first four games of its California road trip. Matthew Boyd (6-10) pitched six-hit ball into the sixth inning, but took his sixth loss in nine starts overall.
Yankees 7, White Sox 0 – Lynn, Yankees stop 5-game slide by beating White Sox 7-0
Lance Lynn pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning in his first start with New York, and the Yankees rebounded from their tough weekend in Boston by beating the Chicago White Sox 7-0 on Monday night. Lynn provided a big boost for New York after it dropped a season-high five straight games, including a four-game sweep by the major league-leading Red Sox. The White Sox had won a season-high four straight. Adam Engel robbed Greg Bird of a potential three-run homer with an outstanding leaping catch over the wall in center in the fourth, but Chicago was shut out for the 10th time this year. Manager Rick Renteria sent infielder Matt Davidson out to the mound for the ninth, and he struck out Giancarlo Stanton while pitching a scoreless inning for the third time this season. Dylan Covey (4-8) was charged with four runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander dropped to 1-6 in his last seven starts.
Cubs 3, Royals 1 – Baez homers, Hamels sharp again in Cubs’ 3-1 win over Royals
Javier Baez went deep, Cole Hamels pitched six strong innings and the Chicago Cubs beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1 on Monday night. Baez hit the first pitch from reliever Kevin McCarthy (4-4) in the sixth inning to center for his 25th home run, putting the Cubs ahead 2-1. Baez doubled in the eighth to score Jason Heyward, upping his RBI total to an NL-leading 88. Hamels (7-9) is 2-0 since the Cubs acquired him in a July 27 trade with the Texas Rangers. He allowed one run and seven hits. Alcides Escobar’s two-out second-inning single scored Rosell Herrera for the first earned run Hamels allowed at Kauffman Stadium in four career starts, covering 21 2/3 innings. The Royals have lost five straight and are tied with the Baltimore Orioles for the worst record in the majors at 34-78. Rain delayed the game 22 minutes in the fourth.

MLB – Oakland acquires pitcher Mike Fiers from Tigers
The Oakland Athletics have acquired right-hander Mike Fiers from the Detroit Tigers for two players to be named or cash. The Tigers announced the move Monday. The 33-year-old Fiers is 7-6 with a 3.48 ERA this season. The rebuilding Tigers picked him up before the season on a $6 million, one-year contract , and he pitched well enough that he became a candidate to be traded to a contender. Detroit wasn’t able to work out a deal before the non-waiver trade deadline last week, but the Tigers have now sent him to an Oakland team that, if the season ended now, would be the American League’s second wild card. Fiers was with the World Series champion Astros last year, but he was not included on any of Houston’s postseason rosters.
MLB – White Sox put OF Leury Garcia on DL
The Chicago White Sox have placed outfielder Leury Garcia on the 10-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain. Garcia got hurt during Sunday’s 8-7 victory at Tampa Bay. Garcia, who has made at least one start at six different positions this season, is batting .280 with four homers, 31 RBIs and 11 steals.
NCAAFB – Michigan State CB Josiah Scott expected to miss 2 months
Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio says cornerback Josiah Scott is expected to miss about two months after a non-contact injury. That announcement from Dantonio was the most significant bit of news when the Spartans held their annual media day on Monday. Scott started 12 games last season as a freshman. Dantonio didn’t elaborate on the injury. He said defensive end Dillon Alexander also went down with a non-contact injury. Alexander’s injury was to his foot. The Spartans had high hopes for their secondary, with starters Khari Willis, David Dowell, Justin Layne and Scott all back. Now it appears they’ll be without Scott for a while.
NCAAFB – 13 UNC players suspended for selling shoes
Thirteen North Carolina players face early season suspensions for selling team-issued shoes. UNC said Monday nine players received four-game suspensions for the secondary NCAA violations. Two players will sit two games and two others will be sidelined for one contest. The NCAA approved a school request to delay two suspensions affecting multiple players at one position, while the other 11 suspensions start with the Sept. 1 opener at California. The list of players include sophomore quarterback Chazz Surratt, who is suspended the first four games. Surratt started seven games last season and entered preseason competing with Nathan Elliott for the starting job.
NFL – Lions remove DE Ziggy Ansah from PUP list
The Detroit Lions have removed defensive end Ziggy Ansah from the active/physically unable to perform list. The Lions announced the move Monday. They have not said what injury caused Ansah to go on the PUP list. Ansah hasn’t played a full 16 games since the 2015 season. He is back with the Lions for this season on the franchise tag. Ansah played in 14 games last season and finished with 12 sacks, including three each against the Giants, Bengals and Packers. Detroit drafted him in the first round in 2013.
NFL – Cardinals lose starting center
The Arizona Cardinals have lost starting center A.Q. Shipley for the season with a torn right ACL. Coach Steve Wilks says the center “heard something pop” in his knee during a goal-line drill in training camp on Saturday. The six-year NFL veteran started all 16 games each of the past two seasons and was the only member of the Cardinals offensive line to play every game either year. Shipley will be replaced by rookie Mason Cole, who was selected in the third round.
NASCAR – France takes leave from NASCAR following DWI, drug arrest
NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France is taking an indefinite leave of absence following his arrest in New York’s Hamptons Sunday night on charges of driving while intoxicated and criminal possession of oxycodone. Police say France had a blood-alcohol content that was more than twice the legal limit, smelled of booze and slurred his words after he was seen blowing through a stop sign in Sag Harbor. France issued a statement apologizing to NASCAR fans, the industry and his family. He has been NASCAR’s chairman and CEO since 2003. His uncle, Jim France, a vice chairman and executive vice president, will take over those roles on an interim basis.
