Angels 12, White Sox 8 – Arcia’s 4 RBIs in debut help Angels beat White Sox 12-8
Francisco Arcia became the first Los Angeles Angels player with four RBIs in his major league debut, hitting a three-run homer in a 12-8 win over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. A 28-year-old who has spent 12 seasons in the minor leagues, Arcia was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake and started at catcher following the trade of Martin Maldonado to Houston earlier in the day. Batting eighth in the order, Arcia lined out in the second inning, walked in the fourth, struck out in the fifth and hit a three-run homer in the seventh against Juan Minaya that put the Angels ahead 9-5. He added a run-scoring single in the eighth off Chris Volstad. Ian Kinsler and Kole Calhoun also homered for the Angels, who have won consecutive games for the first time since June 29-30. Albert Pujols singled for his 3,060th hit, tying Craig Biggio for 24th place, and Justin Upton had four hits for the first time with the Angels. Daniel Palka and Jose Abreu each hit two home runs for the White Sox, who matched their season high with six homers. Avisail Garcia and Nicky Delmonico also went deep.

Cubs 7, Diamondbacks 6 – Bote, Rizzo homer in 9th to lift Cubs over D-Backs 7-6
David Bote hit a tying, two-run homer off Brad Boxberger with one out in the ninth inning, Anthony Rizzo followed two pitches later with a winning home run and the Chicago Cubs overcame a five-run deficit to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 on Thursday. Rizzo took a strike, then sent a thigh-high changeup to the top of the bleachers in right-center. Boxberger (1-4) blew a save for the fifth time in 29 chances. Nick Ahmed hit his first career grand slam in the fifth, an inning after Alex Avila’s two-run homer, as the Diamondbacks built a 6-1 lead.  Eddie Butler (1-1), the fifth Chicago reliever, retired Jon Jay on a flyout that stranded two runners in the ninth. Cubs starter Tyler Chatwood allowed four runs, five hits and six walks in 4 2/3 innings. Chatwood leads the major leagues with 85 walks and has a 7.71 ERA in his last five starts.

MLB – Bucket on head might have saved fan injured at Wrigley Field
A man might have saved himself from serious injury when a large metal pin fell from Wrigley Field’s centerfield scoreboard because he had a plastic bucket on his head during a Chicago Cubs game.  Cubs spokesman Julian Green tells the Chicago Tribune that the 19-year-old man was hit by a 6- to 8-inch pin during Tuesday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Green says the man received five staples to close a cut on his head, but that the bucket apparently helped shield him.  Green said team officials were investigating whether the pin used to attach the scoreboard’s metal numbered tiles was dislodged or a worker dropped it. The scoreboard is manually operated, with workers inside hanging the tiles. Green says the team hasn’t had similar problems before.

MSU/Nassar – Michigan State suing insurers over Nassar claims coverage
Michigan State University is suing its insurance carriers over coverage of sexual assault claims by victims of jailed sports medicine doctor Larry Nassar.  The lawsuit was filed Thursday in Ingham County Circuit Court. School General Counsel Robert Young says in a release that the carriers have failed to honor “their policies.”  Michigan State announced in May it reached a $500 million settlement with 332 women and girls who said they were assaulted by Nassar. Interim President John Engler has said all the school’s insurers participated in mediation toward the settlement. Nassar is serving a 60-year federal prison term for child porn possession, then 40 to 175 years in state prison for the sexual assaults. The Associated Press left messages Thursday evening seeking comment from Michigan State’s largest carrier, United Educators.

NFL – Colts’ fans welcome back Luck with standing ovation at camp
Indianapolis Colts fans welcomed back Andrew Luck with a loud roar as he started throwing during the team’s first training camp workout.  He was 2 of 6 with one interception during the first 11-on-11 drills.  It’s the first time anyone outside the team or media has seen Luck throw a pass since he had surgery on his right shoulder in January 2017. Some fans couldn’t wait. They started lining up more than two hours before Thursday afternoon’s practice began in a crowd full of Luck jerseys. Luck is coming back from a partially torn labrum in his right shoulder. New coach Frank Reich says Luck is under no practice restrictions though he will sit out some extra days at camp.

NFL – Winston appeals to fans for support
Jameis Winston is appealing for continued support from unhappy fans who think he no longer deserves to be the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  The fourth-year signal-caller spoke publicly Thursday for the first time since the NFL suspended him three games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy by groping a female Uber driver more than two years ago.   He declined to discuss specifics about the March 2016 incident in Scottsdale, Arizona, repeatedly saying he’s focused on being a good teammate and moving forward.

NBA – Surgery for Butler
The Minnesota Timberwolves say shooting guard Jimmy Butler has undergone minor surgery on his right hand this week and has already returned to offseason activities. Butler averaged 22.2 points per game for the Timberwolves after arriving in a trade with Chicago. He helped lead the Wolves to their first postseason appearance since 2004 despite missing 21 games with a right knee injury.  Butler can opt out of his contract and become a free agent after the upcoming season.

NBA – Milwaukee Bucks, Fiserv make deal for arena naming rights
A little-known hometown company listed on NASDAQ is about to have its name on the Milwaukee Bucks’ new $524 million arena. The Bucks and Fiserv Co. announced Thursday a 25-year naming rights deal for the nearly completed Wisconsin Entertainment and Sports Center in downtown Milwaukee, which opens next month. Terms were not disclosed. The arena will be named Fiserv Forum and will be the new home of the Bucks and Marquette’s men’s basketball team. Fiserv, based in the Milwaukee suburb of Brookfield, has been listed on NASDAQ for more than 30 years. A member of the Fortune 500, Fiserv provides technology for banks and merchants to move money around.  A public celebration of the new venue is scheduled for Aug. 26.

Golf – PGA – Garrigus leads when play is halted
Robert Garrigus was the leader when the first round of the RBC Canadian Open was suspended due to high wind and potential lightning. Garrigus fired a 9-under 63 that included a birdie after a rock saved his ball from water. He made five straight birdies on Nos. 2-6, then birdied four of the last six holes. PGA Tour rookie Adam Schenk was second. He birdied the first five and last three.

Golf – Champions – Co-leaders at St. Andrews
American Kirk Triplett and Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand shot 7-under 65s to lead the Senior British Open by one stroke over Paul Mcginley and Stephen Ames through one round. Bernhard Langer is in the mix at 5 under, tying him for fifth with David Toms and Scott McCarron. As many as 16 players shot 68 or less, a group that almost included 68-year old Tom Watson, on a bright and breezy day. Watson was minus-3.

Golf – LPGA – Joh leads Ladies Scottish Open
Tiffany Joh shot a career-best 9-under 62 at the Ladies Scottish Open to take a four-shot lead after Thursday’s first round. In-Kyung Kim, Amy Yang and Jenny Shin all shot 66 to share a three-way South Korean tie for second place at Gullane Golf Club.
