Red Sox 9, Tigers 1 – Sale shuts down Tigers in Boston’s 9-1 victory
Chris Sale struck out nine in six scoreless innings, and Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a three-run homer to lift the Boston Red Sox to a 9-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. Sale (11-4) allowed two hits, lowered his ERA to an American League-best 2.13 and won his sixth straight decision. The Red Sox are 19-4 in their last 23 games, and the AL East leaders cruised through the finale of this series after scoring just one run in the previous two nights at Detroit. Blaine Hardy (3-3) allowed four runs and five hits in three-plus innings. Jeimer Candelario homered for the Tigers in the seventh. Sale has won each of his last five starts, allowing one run in 33 innings in that span. He had gone five straight starts with at least 11 strikeouts _ and only one walk in each _ but that streak came to an end when he was lifted Sunday after 99 pitches.

Mariners 8, White Sox 2 – Healy’s pair of 3-run homers lift M’s over White Sox 8-2

Healy had five-RBI games against Colorado on July 8 and for Oakland versus Toronto on June 5 last year. Marco Gonzales (11-5) won his fourth consecutive start, allowing two runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings. He did not give up a hit or a walk in the first five innings. Lopez (4-8) allowed five hits and four walks in five innings.

Cubs 7, Cardinals 2 – Quintana, Cubs beat Cardinals 7-2
Jose Quintana pitched seven effective innings, keeping Matt Carpenter in the ballpark and helping the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-2 on Sunday. Quintana (9-6) allowed two runs and six hits, struck out six and walked four in his first start since July 10. The left-hander also matched his career high with 121 pitches after he got an extended break to work with pitching coach Jim Hickey on his changeup and get over some shoulder fatigue. Kyle Schwarber hit a tiebreaking solo homer off Mike Mayers (2-1) with two out in the sixth inning, and the Cubs broke it open with three runs in the eighth. The NL Central leaders took three of five from the Cardinals in their first series after the All-Star break and moved 3 1/2 games ahead of second-place Milwaukee. CFL – Johnny Manziel traded from Hamilton to Montreal
Johnny Manziel is headed to the Montreal Alouettes. Montreal acquired the former Heisman Trophy winner and offensive linemen Tony Washington and Landon Rice from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday for defensive end Jamaal Westerman, wide receiver Chris Williams and first-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021.  Montreal made the move a day after starting quarterback Drew Willy sustained his second injury of the season. Montreal backup Jeff Mathews also is out with a foot injury, leaving third-stringer Matt Shiltz to play the final three quarters Saturday night in a 25-8 loss at Calgary.  Making a comeback after being released by the Cleveland Browns in March 2016, Manziel was unable to get on the field in Hamilton behind starter Jeremiah Masoli. In two preseason games, the former Texas &M star was 21 of 32 for 168 yards and a touchdown. Alouettes coach Mike Sherman recruited Maziel to Texas A&M when he was the Aggies’ head coach. Montreal is 1-4 and has scored a CFL-low 69 points and allowed a league-high 148 points.

Cycling – Magnus Cort Nielsen wins Stage 15 of Tour de France
Magnus Cort Nielsen of Denmark sprinted away from two other challengers to win Stage 15 of the Tour de France on Sunday. The Astana rider claimed his first career win at the Tour after staying ahead of Ion Izagirre and Bauke Mollema in a sprint over the final 200 meters of the hilly 181.5-kilometer (112.7-mile) leg from Millau that finished in a long descent to Carcassonne.  The three riders were the last of a breakaway group of 29 cyclists. Geraint Thomas in the yellow jersey, second-placed Chris Froome, and the rest of the overall contenders were in a pack more than 10 minutes behind and had not finished yet. The race will have a rest day on Monday. That pause precedes the four days in the Pyrenees, followed by the individual time trial on the penultimate day of the race.
