Berrien County Treasurer Bret Witkowski is thanking Honor Credit Union for making an effort to promote its new property tax savings accounts. Witkowski tells WSJM News he worked with some local banks to create the accounts taxpayers can use to have a portion of their earnings put aside each month for property taxes later in the year.

“We encourage people to set aside money from their paychecks or however they do it automatically so it’s kind of out of sight and out of mind so that when that tax bill comes…they’ve got the money to pay it,” Witkowski said.

Witkowski says Honor Credit Union, United Federal Credit Union, Edgewater Bank, 1st Source Bank, and New Buffalo Savings are all offering the accounts. Honor Credit Union has printed up special flyers to advertise them, noting the accounts have no minimum balance. Witkowski’s office will be handing out the materials and posting them online.
