Detroit lost is third straight and dropped to 2-14 since June 17.  Tigers Manager Ron Gardenhire, who left Wednesday’s game in Chicago with heat exhaustion, stayed in the clubhouse Thursday while bench coach Steve Liddle managed. The game started 15 minutes late due to a brief rain shower.

Astros 4, White Sox 3 – Gurriel’s RBI single in 9th gives Astros 4-3 win over Sox
Jose Altuve hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning and Yuli Gurriel’s RBI single with one out in Houston’s two-run ninth lifted the Astros to a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night.  The Astros trailed by 1 when Joakim Soria (0-3) walked pinch-hitter Tony Kemp with no outs in the ninth before advancing to third on a single by pinch-hitter Marwin Gonzalez. George Springer snapped an 0 for 8 slump and tied it at 3-3 with his RBI single to shallow center field. It was a much-needed hit for the World Series MVP who has been struggling lately, going 6 for 70 since June 15.  Justin Verlander bounced back from his last start where he allowed nine hits and five runs _ both season highs _ in a loss to Tampa Bay with a solid outing. He yielded four hits and two runs and struck out 10 in seven innings.  Joe Smith (3-1) allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth for the win in his first appearance since June 6.  Omar Narvaez homered with two hits and Leury Garcia’s solo shot in the eighth inning put the White Sox up 3-2.

NHL – Red Wings re-sign Athanasiou to 2-year contract
The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed left wing Andreas Athanasiou to a two-year contract worth $6 million. The 23-year-old Athanasiou set career highs with 17 assists and 33 points in 71 games last season. He has 43 goals and 33 assists in 172 career games _ all with Detroit. Tennis – Wimbledon – Day 4 – Cilic is out, Halep advances
Day 4 at Wimbledon was a disaster for the No. 3 singles seeds. Defending women’s champion Garbine Muguruza and 2017 men’s finalist Marin Cilic were ousted in the second round, further reducing the number of top-10 seeds still alive in either bracket. Muguruza was stunned 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 by 47th-ranked Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium. Van Uytvanck had been just 1-4 in the grasscourt tournament before dominating the last two sets.  The surprise means only two of the top eight seeded women are still in the field after only four days of action at the All England Club.

Cilic blew a two-sets-to-none lead in a 3-6, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-5 loss to Argentina’s Guido Pella. Cilic was cruising when the match was suspended by rain in the third set on Wednesday. His departure leaves No. 8 Kevin Anderson as the highest-seeded player left in Roger Federer’s side of the draw,

Women’s top seed Simona Halep advanced to the third round with a 7-5, 6-0 rout of Saisai Zheng.  Top-ranked Rafael Nadal advanced with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win over Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan.  No. 12 Novak Djokovic overcame an apparent thigh problem to beat Horacio Zeballos 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 and reach the third round.

NCAA Wrestling – Ex-athletes say Ohio State doc groped, ogled men for years
Some of the men who say they were molested by a now-dead team doctor decades ago at Ohio State University describe him as a locker-room voyeur who unnecessarily groped athletes during medical exams and wasn’t stopped by administrators even after students complained about his behavior. Former wrestler Nick Nutter remembers teammates referring to Dr. Richard Strauss by the nickname “Dr. Jelly Paws.” Nutter is among eight men who detailed their experiences in interviews with The Associated Press. Independent investigators are reviewing allegations against Strauss by men from 14 sports and in connection with his work for student health services and his off-campus medical clinic. Strauss killed himself in 2005. No one has publicly defended him amid the investigation.

Golf – PGA – Simpson’s career-best 61 tops leaderboard
Webb Simpson is off to a great start at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier. He shot a 9-under 61 in the PGA event for a one-stroke lead over Whee Kim. Simpson posted his career-best score after shaking off a two-hour weather delay with six holes left in his round. Kim had back-to-back bogeys on the front nine on the Old White TPC, and then ran off five birdies over a seven-hole stretch.  Teenager Joaquin Niemann of Chile was another stroke back at 7-under 63 and Kelly Kraft was at 64. Phil Mickelson shot 66 in his first tournament since the U.S. Open, when he intentionally violated golf rules by hitting a moving ball on the 13th green in the third round.
