Indiana Michigan Power is once again warning customers about a phone scam that’s going around. Spokesperson Schnee Garrett tells WSJM News customers have reported getting calls from someone who claims to be with the utility. The scammer will say that a customer is behind on their bill and about to have the power shut off.
“The scam callers often instruct a customer to buy a debit card and then provide a specific number to provide that debit card number,” Garrett said. “The scammers than sometimes seek personal credit card or banking information from customers.”
Garrett says I&M will not call you demanding immediate payment to avoid a shutoff. She notes customers who have received this recent round of calls have said it sounds very convincing. I&M advises everyone not to fall for it. If you have any questions about whether you’re behind on your bill, call Indiana Michigan Power.
