Benton Harbor Area Schools will be led by Dr. Robert Herrera, after all. The school board, state officials, and Herrera have agreed on a start date of July 17 for him to serve as the district’s CEO. The board announced his hire a few weeks ago, only to have Herrera issue a statement the next day saying there were too many unanswered questions from the state at the time and saying he had not been offered a job. He is currently the superintendent of South Haven Public Schools.
Herrera will report to state officials as part of the district’s consent agreement, and the school board will now essentially be serving in an advisory role. The vote to hire him was 4-1, with trustee Lisa Gulley casting the lone “no” vote.
