State Representative Kim LaSata is among the Michigan lawmakers calling on the Michigan State Waterways Commission to drop plans for a tax on small watercraft like canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards. She tells WSJM News the House overwhelmingly voted this week for a resolution opposing the move.

“It’s a $10 tax, which doesn’t seem like it might be that big of a deal, but it’s the principle of the thing,” LaSata said. “We can’t start taxing things that people are doing to get out and exercise.”

LaSata tells us there is no reason why the owners of small canoes or kayaks should have to register them with the state each year. She says she hopes the state Senate also approves a resolution against the kayak tax.
