The Coast Guard has established what’s called the Unified Command to oversee the pollution response to the coolant fluid that spilled into the Straits of Mackinac. The leak came from a transmission cable that carries electricity under water. Coast Guard Ensign Pamela Mannes spoke with Michigan News Network about the issue.

“The initial report the Coast Guard received indicated that approximately 600 gallons of product was released,” Mannes said. “Our investigation in working with the responsible party, we indicated that the maximum potential was about 4,000 gallons of product.”

Mannes says there are no reported impacts to wildlife or the public. The cause is under investigation.
