A Dowagiac man is facing several charges following an investigation by police that caused a middle school to be placed on lockdown Wednesday.

The Dowagiac Police Department tells WSJM News officers were called out to the Vineyard Place Apartments shortly after noon on a report of a man running through the complex with a gun. Witnesses said he had also driven around the complex recklessly.

While police were looking for the suspect, nearby Dowagiac Middle School was placed on a soft lockdown as a precaution. Officers found the man still at the complex and say the middle school was in no danger.

The suspect had gone to the apartments to confront someone with whom he’d had a fight. Turns out the handgun was a pellet gun, but police also recovered a rifle he’d brought to the scene.

The 20-year-old suspect was arrested on charges of felonious assault, brandishing a firearm, reckless driving, and driving with no license. His name hasn’t yet been released.
