Federal legislation to crack down on websites that promote human trafficking has the support of Congressman Fred Upton. He tells WSJM News the “Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act” passed the House last week by a vote of 388 to 25.

“We are now going to be sanctioning some of the providers of the online services that if in fact they are a participant in helping sex predators, there’s going to be recourse legally for folks to go after them,” Upton said.

Some internet companies expressed concerns that websites will be held criminally responsible for everything a user might do. Other critics noted the bill equates sex work with sex trafficking. Upton says affected websites just need to properly moderate themselves.
