Lightning 4, Red Wings 1 – Lightning beat Red Wings for 11th straight time, 4-1
Steven Stamkos scored twice, Nikita Kucherov had a goal and three assists, and the NHL-leading Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Detroit Red Wings for the 11th straight time, 4-1 Thursday night. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 38 saves and Victor Hedman picked up three assists for the Lightning, who were coming off an 0-2 road trip. Alex Killorn had the other Tampa Bay goal. Tomas Tatar scored for Detroit and Jimmy Howard stopped 28 shots.
Ducks 3, Blackhawks 2 – Kase scores as Ducks knock off Blackhawks, 3-2
Ondrej Kase had a goal and two assists, Adam Henrique scored in the third period and the Anaheim Ducks handed the Chicago Blackhawks their eighth straight loss with a 3-2 victory on Thursday night. Nick Ritchie added a goal and an assist and John Gibson made 42 saves as Anaheim improved to 1-1 on a four-game trip. The Ducks had dropped two in a row and four of six, hurting their playoff positioning as they try for a wild card in the Western Conference. Duncan Keith scored his first goal of the season for last-place Chicago, which has lost seven in a row at home. Saad also snapped a long scoring drought, and Forsberg made 29 stops. The eight-game slide for the once-mighty Blackhawks is their longest losing streak since they dropped nine in a row in early 2012.

NASCAR – Blaney, Elliott win on an impressive day for Penske
Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott were the winners of NASCAR’s two qualifying races at Daytona International Speedway. Blaney edged out Penske teammate Joey Logano to take the first race and land a spot in the second row for Sunday’s Daytona 500. Elliott won the second race in a Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to put a temporary halt on the Team Penske dominance. Kevin Harvick was second to Elliott. The three Penske drivers dominated the all-star race and were at the front of the field for the entire Thursday night race. Blaney won it in overtime after Brad Keselowski’s accident brought out the caution.
NFL – 5 sites named as finalists to host 2019 or 2020 NFL draft
The NFL has named five sites as finalists to host the NFL draft in either 2019 or 2020. Finalists to host either the 2019 or 2020 draft include Denver; Kansas City, Missouri; Las Vegas; Nashville, Tennessee; as well as a combined entry of Cleveland and Canton, Ohio. Canton is the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Representatives for each site will offer presentations before the final
selections are made in May at the NFL spring meetings in Atlanta. The draft historically had taken place in New York each year, but the league plans to move it around since it went to Chicago in 2015 and 2016 before moving to Philadelphia last year. This year’s draft is taking place April 26-28 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
NFL – Raiders drop Janikowski
Sebastian Janikowski’s career with the Oakland Raiders has ended after 18 seasons. Owner Mark Davis has released a statement thanking the kicker for his contributions to the franchise. Janikowski is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next month and the Raiders told him this week they don’t plan to retain him. Janikowski is the Raiders’ all-time leader with 268 games played and 1,799 points. His 55 field goals from at least 50 yards are the most in NFL history. Janikowski spent all of last season on injured reserve with a back injury. He turns 40 on March 2.
Golf – PGA – Cantlay shares lead at Riviera; Woods 6 back
Patrick Cantlay returned to what amounts to his home course on the PGA Tour and shot a 5-under 66 to share the lead at the Genesis Open. It sounds like a plot that belongs to Tiger Woods, who also grew up 40 miles away and returned to Riviera for the first time in 12 years. Woods lost a ball in a eucalyptus tree, recovered from a rugged start and shot 72. Cantlay shared the lead with Tony Finau, who had four birdies in his opening five holes. Cantlay grew up in Long Beach and played at UCLA, where he was the No. 1 amateur in the world. Because of back problems that kept him out of golf for three years, this was his first time playing Riviera in five years.

- Figure Skating – Men’s
Figure skater Nathan Chen is at a loss for words trying to explain where his Olympic short program went awry, one that left the American medal contender fortunate just to qualify for the free skate. In fact, Chen was at a loss for what to do next. He says, “Things just didn’t click together.” After crowd-pleasing performances from teammates Adam Rippon and Vincent Zhou, the 18-year-old Chen failed to cleanly land a single jump in his high-flying short program. The best hope for an American figure skating gold medal fell Friday on his opening quad flip, stepped out on a quad toe and triple axel, and never could work a missed combination back into his shaky program. The result was a score of 82.27 points, which put him in 17th place.
- Men’s Ice Hockey – Preliminary Round
College players have led the United States to an important 2-1 victory over Slovakia in group play at the Pyeongchang Olympics. Ryan Donato scored two power-play goals and Troy Terry dominated with his speed. Donato, who plays for his father Ted at Harvard, delivered the kind of offense USA Hockey wanted when it picked four NCAA players for its no-NHL Olympic roster. Donato, Terry and American Hockey League scoring star Chris Bourque were all additions to the U.S. after the pre-Olympic Deutschland Cup in November, during which the U.S. struggled to score, particularly against Slovakia goaltender Jan Laco.
- Alpine Skiing – Women’s Slalom
Frida Hansdotter of Sweden has held off American Mikaela Shiffrin and a tightly bunched field to win the Olympic slalom title at the Pyeongchang Games. Shiffrin wound up fourth after medaling a day earlier in the giant slalom. She won the slalom title four years ago in Sochi at age 18. Hansdotter was in second after the first run, then powered through the sun-splashed course on her final run to finish in a combined time of 1 minute, 38.63 seconds. First-run leader Wendy Holdener of Switzerland was second and Katharina Gallhuber of Austria earned a surprise bronze.
- Snowboarding – Women’s Snowboard Cross
Italy’s Michela Moioli has won the gold medal in Olympic women’s snowboardcross. She overtook American Lindsey Jacobellis about halfway down the course, then beat the rest of the field to the finish line. Jacobellis finished fourth, continuing her hard-luck career at the Olympics. The world’s most decorated rider, Jacobellis has failed to return to the podium since settling for silver after an ill-advised jump in 2006 while she was clear in the lead. Julia Pereira de Sousa Mablieau of France took silver this time, and defending champion Eva Samkova of the Czech Republic got clipped from behind and skidded across the line for bronze. Jacobellis had about a two-body-length lead on the field when Moioli overtook her on a curve. Samkova drafted behind and pushed Jacobellis out to the edge of the course and, from there, she couldn’t gain any ground.
- Snowboarding – Men’s Snowboard Cross
Markus Schairer of Austria is heading home for treatment after breaking his neck in a frightening crash during the Olympic men’s snowboardcross quarterfinals. Schairer lost control in the air on the final jump of the treacherous downhill course on Thursday. He slammed into the snow on his back, sending his goggles flying. He was able to get to his feet before being taken for a medical exam. The Austrian Olympic Committee says Schairer fractured the fifth vertebrae in his neck. It says there is no indication the 30-year-old Schairer experienced any neurological impairment or long-term damage.
