State Senator Tonya Schuitmaker has been named the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police Legislator of the Year. The Lawton Republican tells WSJM News she was selected for the honor due to her work on several fronts, including the fight against opioids. She pointed to recent legislation requiring prescriptions for opioids to be checked against medical records in the state.

“Certainly, I hope with the MAPS legislation that was signed into law in December, that will go a long ways in terms of doctor shopping and pill mills and cut down on the number of illegal opioids that we have on the street.” Schuitmaker said.

Schuitmaker was also honored for her work to make sure ignition breathalyzers aren’t manipulated. She tells us she was previously named the police chief association’s legislator of year four or five years ago. Schuitmaker received the award at a reception Thursday.
