Michigan lawmakers from Van Buren County are saluting Governor Rick Snyder following his final State of the State address this week. State Representative Mary Whiteford tells WSJM News she was pleased Snyder mentioned the need to expand broadband internet to rural areas. That’s not all.
“I’m really pleased that he brought up the opioid issue,” Whiteford said. “For the first time in almost history, our population is decreasing, and the reason is that we’ve got so many opioid deaths.”
Whiteford says she wants to work on improving mental health care in the state moving forward. As for state Senator Tonya Schuitmaker, of Lawton, she says the governor’s address was correct to tout economic progress made in Michigan the past several years. Looking ahead, she wants to approve tax reforms.
