The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has launched a new campaign designed to prevent the spread of HIV. Spokesperson Erica Quealy tells WSJM News it’s the “Undetectable = Untransmittable” campaign. She notes the proper regimen of drugs can reduce the detectability of HIV in a patient.

“Often times, the higher the viral load, the greater the likelihood an individuals will transmit HIV,” Quely said. “So, there are different things they can do to achieve viral suppression and maintain it, which will continue to give them that untransmittable status.”

Quealy tells us the state is communicating to HIV patients it is essential they adhere to their treatment plan in order to keep their virus less transmittable. It’s referring people on to resources that can get them treatment. There are more than 15,000 people living with HIV in Michigan.  You can find out more right here.
