A property tax loophole that allowed second homeowners in Michigan to get a reduced rate by claiming their second property is a homestead will now be closed. Governor Rick Snyder signed a bill Wednesday from state Representatives Dave Pagel and Kim LaSata to automatically rescind a property owner’s homestead status if they claim a homestead in another state. It also establishes a penalty requiring them to pay up what they owe. Representative LaSata tells WSJM News this is a good thing.

“That money is money that goes directly to our schools,” LaSata said.

The problem was brought to Pagel and LaSata’s attention by the Berrien County Treasurer’s office. LaSata attended her first bill signing with the governor on Wednesday.
