Auto insurance rates in Michigan took front and center stage in Lansing Tuesday. That’s where testimony was taken on a bill that aims to reduce the premiums. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says during his time as President and CEO of the Detroit Medical Center, he saw the best and the worst.

“It’s always troubled me that half of the people in the city of Detroit have nothing because you had this system where you either bought the most expensive care in America, or as a representative said earlier, you drive as a criminal and you have no care at all.”

One of the bill’s sponsors says we have a broken, out of date no fault insurance system that’s too expensive. Some opponents say say that the proposal would benefit insurers and hurt crash victims with substandard coverage. They also say insurers will still be allowed to exploit low income policy holders.
