MLB – Major League Baseball
Last Night
Detroit Tigers 13, Kansas City Royals 2
Cleveland Indians 9, Chicago White Sox 4
Pittsburgh Pirates 4, Chicago Cubs 3

Tigers 13, Royals 2 – Jones, Hicks blast 2 homers in Tigers’ 13-2 win over Royals
JaCoby Jones and John Hicks each hit two of Detroit’s six homers in a 13-2 rout of Kansas City.    Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez threw only five pitches and was knocked out of the game in the first inning after getting hit in the right leg by Whit Merrifield’s single. Sanchez exited with a bruised calf.  Myles Jaye (1-0) replaced Sanchez and pitched 2 1/3 innings for the win. Jason Vargas (14-10) allowed seven earned runs and six hits in two innings. Mikie Mahtook and Jose Iglesias also homered for the Tigers.

Indians 9, White Sox 4 – Indians roll to 13th straight win, MLB’s longest streak this season
Jose Ramirez hit two more homers, Austin Jackson also connected and the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 9-4 on Tuesday night for their 13th straight victory, the longest run by a major league team this season.  Danny Salazar got just two outs in his return from right elbow inflammation, but Cleveland’s deep bullpen took over from there. Seven relievers combined for 8 1/3 scoreless innings as the Indians moved within one of their franchise-record 14-game win streak last year. Matt Davidson hit a three-run drive for last-place Chicago, which has dropped six of eight. Top prospect Yoan Moncada went 1 for 5 in his return from a bruised right shin.  When the White Sox led 4-3 in the first, it was the first time the Indians had trailed since they were down by one against the Yankees on Aug. 28. Dan Otero (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.

Pirates 4, Cubs 3 – Pirates rally by Cubs 4-3 for 4th straight win
Max Moroff and David Freese each hit an RBI single off Carl Edwards Jr. in the eighth inning as Pittsburgh rallied past Chicago 4-3.  Pinch-hitter John Jaso led off the eighth with a walk and scored when Moroff hit a bloop single off Edwards (3-4) to tie the game. Freese drove home Moroff three batters later after the Cubs intentionally walked rookie Josh Bell. Jordan Luplow hit the second home run of his career for Pittsburgh. Wade LeBlanc (5-2) earned the win in relief. Felipe Rivero worked a perfect ninth for his 18th save. The Pirates ran their winning streak to four on the same day the club announced contract extensions for manager Clint Hurdle and general manager Neal Huntington.  Chicago, which leads the NL Central, has dropped three straight.

MLB – Two former Tigers help Houston beat Seattle
Former Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander pitched six strong innings and won his Astros debut after another former Tiger Cameron Maybin hit a two-run homer with one out in the seventh for to give Houston a 3-1 win over Seattle.  With all the attention on Verlander’s first game for a team other than the Detroit Tigers, it was another deadline acquisition that sent Houston to its sixth straight victory. Maybin was claimed off waivers from the Angels on Aug. 31 and hit his second home run since joining the Astros to snap a 1-all tie.  Verlander (11-8), the 2011 AL MVP and a six-time All-Star, allowed six hits and struck out seven. Joe Musgrove threw two innings of scoreless relief and Ken Giles got his 29th save. Kyle Seager homered off Verlander.

MLB – Bosox caught stealing signs
The Boston Red Sox have reportedly admitted to Major League Baseball that they improperly used an Apple Watch to steal signs from their longtime rival New York Yankees during a series last month. The New York Times said the Red Sox told MLB investigators that Boston manager John Farrell, general Dave Dombrowski and other team executives were not aware of the scheme. Commissioner Rob Manfred said he wanted to get the matter resolved quickly and didn’t comment about possible penalties.

NFL – Elliott suspension upheld
Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has lost the appeal of his six-game suspension, but he will be allowed to play in the season opener Sunday against the New York Giants. U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant said he would rule on Elliott’s request for a temporary restraining order by Friday. If the request is denied and no further legal action taken, Elliott’s suspension would start in Week 2 at Denver.

NFL – NFL says Dolphins/Bucs will not be played in Miami as Irma approaches
The NFL says Sunday’s game between the Dolphins and Buccaneers will not be played in Miami this week. If the game is not relocated, it will be postponed until November, when the teams share the same bye week. A decision on when and where to play is expected later today.

Tennis – US Open – Venus advances to women’s semis
Women’s ninth seed Venus Williams will take on fellow American Sloane Stephens in the U.S. Open semifinals. Venus beat Petra Kvitova and Stephens eliminated Anastasija Sevastova, both by 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 scores. Men’s 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta reached the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win over Diego Schwartzman.

NCAA Football – Tide, Buckeyes still 1-2
Alabama and Ohio State remain 1-2 in the latest Associated Press college football poll, but there are numerous changes after that. The Crimson Tide claimed 60 of 61 first-place votes following their 24-7 win over previous No. 3 Florida State. Clemson has replaced the Seminoles in the three-hole, followed by Penn State and Oklahoma. Southern Cal, Washington, Michigan, Wisconsin and Florida State round out the top 10. The Seminoles are spending the rest of the season without quarterback Deondre Francois because of a season-ending knee injury suffered against Alabama. No. 23 TCU and No. 24 Notre Dame have cracked the poll, replacing West Virginia and Texas.

NBA – Rockets sold for $2.2 Billion
The Houston Rockets are close to changing hands. A person with knowledge of the details says restaurant and casino owner Tilman Fertitta has agreed to buy the franchise from Leslie Alexander for an NBA-record $2.2 billion. The deal includes Clutch City Sports and Entertainment and must be approved by the NBA Board of Governors.

NBA/NHL – Ribbon-cutting held at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena
A ribbon-cutting ceremony has been held at an $860 million sports complex that is the new home of the Detroit Red Wings and Pistons.  Elected, business and community leaders got a chance Tuesday to see the 20,000-seat Little Caesars Arena.  The NHL’s Red Wings and NBA’s Pistons will begin their seasons in the coming weeks at the arena. The Detroit City Council approved $34.5 million in taxpayer-funded bonds for the project. The arena is owned by Detroit’s Downtown Development Authority and will be managed by the Ilitch family’s Olympia Development of Michigan. The Ilitch family, which owns the Red Wings, is financing most of the project.  A public tour of the arena is planned for Saturday.  The arena is to anchor a 50-block neighborhood of offices, apartments, restaurants and shops.

Soccer – Yanks settle for stalemate in Honduras, drop to fourth
The United States men’s soccer team did little to improve its shot at a World Cup berth. The Americans could only play to a 1-1 tie at Honduras and needed Bobby Wood’s goal in the 85th minute to avoid a second straight loss. The U.S. trailed for 58 minutes before Wood scored off a scramble.  The U.S. dropped to fourth in the North and Central American and Caribbean region with nine points, ahead of Honduras on goal difference and one point behind Panama with two qualifiers remaining. The top three nations in the six-team group qualify for next year’s tournament in Russia.
