In Traverse City, the final flight for the Coast Guard’s MH-65 dolphin helicopter took place Monday afternoon. Coast Guard Lieutenant Ted Borny told Michigan News Network the new MH-60 chopper will be used from here on out.

“Some of the advantages over the MH-65 include a longer range in endurance so it can fly farther and get to targets without having to refuel, saving time,” Borny said. “In addition, we’ve got anti icing and deicing equipment on board which will help especially in the winter months when things get a little bit cooler here.”

Since 1995, the MH-65 choppers at Air Station Traverse City have been utilized in search and rescue missions throughout the Great Lakes region. Borny says the choppers have flown more than 68,000 hours.
