St. Joseph City Commissioners are pleased with how things went below the bluff for the big Fourth of July weekend. The department of public safety and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department worked together this year to make sure a large number of police officers would be in and around Silver Beach to keep things safe. Mayor Mike Garey witnessed the one near-fight that almost broke out near Silver Beach Pizza, and tells WSJM News police responded quickly and broke it up.

“Police officers from all departments respond in such a professional manner that you really didn’t see it,” Garey said. “There were no lights, no bullhorns. They quickly assessed it, arrested the three individuals, and then people walking by were applauding the officers for taking care of these trouble makers.”

The sheriff’s department said on Tuesday it issued 31 citations for alcohol at the beach on the fourth. 13 minors were arrested for being in possession of alcohol, and there was one domestic violence arrest. Mayor Garey says the key now is to remain vigilant.
