This coming Saturday will bring the next Adopt a Highway clean up event in Michigan. Dan Weingarten, with the Michigan Department of Transportation, tells our newsroom nearly 3,000 community groups are signed up to pick up trash along designated sections of state highways.

“School groups, church groups, families, scouting organizations,” Weingarten said. “It’s really a mixed bag of different types of groups, and the think that’s in common is they all take pride in their community and want to keep it looking nice.”

If you want to sign your group up to help out, go to Michigan.gov/AdoptAHighway. Weingarten tells us about 60,000 pounds of trash gets picked up each year thanks to Adopt a Highway. The program started in 1990, and covers more than 6,000 miles of roads.
